If you are a resident of the excellent state of New Jersey, or simply passing through, Educate yourself: You are currently in the nation that offers the most widely available palette of sports betting alternatives.
Sure Nevada and Mississippi and may have more land-based books, but just in New Jersey can bettors roll the dice on a 3-leg parlay without once having to stop by the casino. And as your setting that bet, be sure to thank the U.S. Supreme Court, which in May 2018 raised the national ban on sports gambling, otherwise known as PASPA.
We also should extend thanks to New Jersey lawmakers for quickly passing legislation which establish the tax rate on internet sports wagering reduced, and for not putting unnecessary restrictions on operators that would hinder the growth of the business. Finally, NJ sports betting would have never went live quickly if it were not for the nation’s regulatory body, the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, that has provided oversight for the state’s online casino and gambling industries since 2013, allowing regulators to make the transition to online sports betting that much easier.
Whether new to sports wagering or some veteran sharp, we’ve got you covered with a comprehensive look at the legal NJ online sports gambling market, covering online and cellular sportsbooks that lawfully take stakes, what you will need to do to get started, and a return on how legal sports betting in the Garden State became a reality. Not an internet guy or woman? We’ll touch on the nation’s physical sportsbooks as well.

Getting started at NJ online sportsbooks
Based on whether you are already involved in the NJ online casino or poker scene, it is going to take anywhere from zero seconds to no longer than 5 minutes to place your first bet. That is, pending you meet a couple of eligibility conditions:
Under 21? Hold all stakes It doesn’t matter how old you may be, if you are under the age of 21, then you cannot enroll an online sports betting account in New Jersey. This is the same age requirement employed by Atlantic City casinos and the state’s internet gaming and poker sites. 18-year-olds might need to adhere to betting on the ponies and the lottery.
Both feet in New Jersey
Players don’t need to necessarily be in New Jersey to register and fund their sportsbook accounts, but in order to play for real-money, they need to have both feet planted in the Garden State. Note, that doesn’t mean that they need to hold residence in New Jersey, rather they merely need to be physically located within its boundaries.
So a bettor from a neighboring state like Pennsylvania or New York can see the New Jersey traces (on most sites), register and finance an account and then head to this Starbucks right over the border to put real-money wagers, in so long as they have an established Wi-Fi or 4G connection.
Registering an account
For all those involved in daily fantasy or NJ online casino/poker, registration on most online sportsbooks is a breeze. That is because many operators have woven their sports betting sites into their current platforms. Have a Play SugarHouse casino account? No need to enroll to your sportsbook. Same goes for DraftKings DFS account holders, and people registered with Betfair Casino, that employs the exact same registration info as FanDuel Sportsbook. Easy.
Registration SSN
Only the last four digits of your SSN required!
For the remainder, registration is an easy two-step process, first requiring that players enter some details in their person, including their social security number (but generally only the last four digits). Then their advice is vetted using a rigorous verification procedure, used to make sure that player identities are protected from any shady deeds. This procedure takes just a couple of seconds, and then players are free to make their first deposit.
Funding an account
While several online sportsbooks at New Jersey offer no-deposit bonuses to new players, those who wish to create more than a few wagers will probably need to make a deposit. Here is the good news: Depositing funds on a NJ online sportsbook is easy, mainly because most operators are successfully handling payment processing for years. Even the kinks, by and large, have already been worked out.
Bettors will discover that just about every sportsbook accepts many different payment methods including ACH, credit/debit cards, prepaid card alternatives, and PayPal, together with transactions processing near instantaneously. There are also a plethora of approaches to get money off the website, with rapid turnaround times. So no need to be anxious if that +1000 bet comes in and you would like to lock up the win.
Word to the wise: When first financing an NJ online sports betting account, make sure you use one of the hyperlinks on the page or on our review pages to make sure that you get the utmost welcome bonus for new players.

Tech spouses: IGT (stage ), Paddy Power Betfair (pricing/risk direction )
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Betfair Casino (wallet), FanDuel Daily Fantasy (desktop platform)
Special characteristics: In-play, money out, active promotional program To say that FanDuel online sportsbook has a great deal going for it would be a pretty gross understatement. Forgetting about its gigantic daily dream database for an instant, FanDuel recently merged with industry sharp Paddy Power Betfair (forming the FanDuel Group), meaning it’s among the most skillful sportsbook vets in its corner. Together, and with a little assistance from IGT, they’ve made a book that’s largely loved from the NJ sports betting community, and of course the team at US Bets as well.

Interesting fact: FanDuel Sportsbook often rolls out promotions at which gamers have a (good) chance to acquire a greater than 100% incentive.
DraftKings Sportsbook
Launch date: August 6, 2018
Welcome bonus: Matched free wager up to $500
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: DraftKings Daily Fantasy (platform, tight pocket )
Special characteristics: In-play, money out
Surprisingly, it was daily dream operator DraftKings rather than an Atlantic City brand that started the first online sports betting site in New Jersey. This first-mover status, along with DK’s loony major user database, connection with advanced tech provider Kambi, and aggressive marketing has paid off big, as DraftKings is without question the industry’s historical market share leader. Whether it’ll remain on top remains a significant question, as rivalry is becoming fierce, and the”juice” on DraftKings tendencies a bit higher comparative to other websites.
DraftKings Sportsbook on Android and desktop Interesting fact: Bettors on DraftKings may utilize their daily dream competition winnings to bet on sportsbetting. BetStars NJ
Launch date: September 13, 2018
Welcome bonus: As much as $500 in free bets
Tech spouses: The Stars Group (parent company)
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: PokerStars NJ (wallet, cellular platform)
Special features: In-play, cash out, Spin & Bet
BetStars is no stranger to the internet sports gambling area, having started an international merchandise in 2015 that has grown quicker than Lebron James’ net value. It is also the sister brand of a tiny online poker website which you might have heard of: PokerStars. Ironically, BetStars NJ — accredited under Resorts Digital — hasn’t made much noise yet, due in part to its late launching on iOS and the lack of a PC platform. But it’s making up for lost time by depositing more promotions at players than you can shake a stick at. That, together with its sleek user interface, cutesy game formats like Spin & Bet, and powerful branding guide us to think it is going attract a fair amount of punters.
BetStars NJ for Android
Interesting fact: BetStars NJ enjoys to provide increased odds on 3-leg NFL parlays. Be on the lookout for these Super Boosts.
Perform SugarHouse Sports
Launch date: August 23, 2018
Welcome bonus: 100% match up to $250 (1x playthrough)
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Play SugarHouse Casino (wallet, platform)
Special features: In-play, cash out, full cellular integration
When Play SugarHouse, managed by Rush Street Interactive, burst upon the NJ online casino arena in September 2016, it was pretty much an afterthought. But players quickly noticed that the website did almost every facet of iGaming better than anyone else. Suffice it to say, the website warms up, and we anticipate its completely integrated sportsbook to execute very well as well. Beyond its leading reputation, Play SugarHouse offers a lot of stakes (both pre-game and live), a competitive and easy-to-clear welcome bonus, free bingo games, and a loyalty program which truly matters. And now that it’s aligned with Monmouth Park it can provide wagers on NBA games — something it couldn’t perform while partnered with Golden Nugget AC.

Interesting fact: The range of available in-play bets for any given contest is typically from the dozens, if not hundreds.
888sport NJ
Launch date: September 10, 2018
Welcome bonus: $10 free + 100% up to $500 (6x playthrough)
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: 888casino, 888poker (wallet, loose ties to stage )
Particular characteristics: In-play, money out
Like BetStars NJ, 888sport has been established in different jurisdictions long before it set sail for the U.S. to not mention, parent firm 888 Holdings, partnered with Caesars in Atlantic City, was an active participant at the NJ iGaming market since 2013, supporting both online casino (888casino) and poker (888poker) websites. All this bodes favorably for 888sport NJ’s prospect, as does its own venture with Kambi, heaps of betting markets, and slick interface. But the playthrough requirements on bonuses are demanding, and some of the lines have something to be desired, so we do wonder how just how large a niche it will carve out.
888sport NJ desktop computer and mobile perspectives Fun fact: 888sport is just one of the very few NJ online sports betting sites where gamers can land a bonus without having to commit a nickel.
Caesars Sportsbook
Launch date: September 6, 2018
Welcome bonus: $10 free + 100% up to $300 (casino only, 10x playthrough on slots)
Tech partners: Scientific Games
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Caesars Casino (wallet and platform)
Special features: full mobile integration, earn Total Rewards credits online For a business which has tons of experience in the cellular sports gambling sphere, Caesars convinced disappointed with the first launch of its internet sportsbook at New Jersey. The traces are favorable, undoubtedly, but there is simply not enough of these, including no in-play alternative. That said, the preparation of a good app has been laid, since the sportsbook has already been integrated into Caesars’ popular online casino program, with sports wagers awarding Total Rewards tier and benefits credits. The cashier can also be top-notch, featuring PayPal, ACH payments and a slew of other alternatives. There’s just no sports specific welcome package and hardly any to wager , and that needs to change.
Caesars NJ Sportsbook — desktop computer and mobile app Interesting Fact: Sports bettors may redeem their got online Full Rewards rewards credits for on-site money or for use at any of the almost 40 Total Rewards casinos.
playMGM Sportsbook
Launch date: August 22, 2018
Welcome bonus: None
Tech partners: IGT (tech), GVC (joint venture)
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: playMGM Casino (wallet)
Particular features: In-play
What do you get when you join one of the largest casino brands on the planet (who happens to encourage a renowned mobile sports gaming program in Nevada), a major gaming operator in GVC, and technology provided by IGT? Turns out, you get a pretty substandard app. Yes, playMGM Sportsbook is serviceable, offering a reasonable variety of gambling markets, strong lines, and a shared wallet with playMGM Casino. But the lack of a distinctive welcome bonus, in-play, and any sense of innovation holds it back. We expect improvements in the not too distant future, which will include a desktop app, but for now, there just is not anything special here.
playMGM Sports on Android
Interesting Fact: playMGM sportsbook consumers can earn freeplay benefits at playMGM Casino.
Sportsbook at William Hill

In just a short time period, William Hill has established itself as a dominant force in the New Jersey sports gambling market. It operates branded publications at Monmouth Park, Ocean Resort Casino, and Tropicana Casino. Complementing its land-based novels is a sports wagering app available for iOS, Android, and background computer. The app is, well… typical, supporting a solid number of betting markets, in-play, and offering a decent cashier. There’s just nothing dazzling about it, at least not yet.
William Hill NJ on desktop and mobile
Interesting fact: William Hill is the only operator in New Jersey tasked with over one land-based spouse.
Land-based sportsbooks in New Jersey
If the many online sports betting websites out there in New Jersey aren’t sufficient to whet your wagering appetite, or if gambling over the web simply isn’t your thing, you’ll be very happy to know that New Jersey plays host to an array of land-based books. And good news for you Central and Northern New Jerseyans, these brick & mortar novels are not confined solely to Atlantic City, as traditional casino gambling is.
Casino sportsbooks
Currently, seven from Atlantic City’s nine present casinos comprise sportsbooks. Some are larger (and more durable ) than others, but we guess that as the industry ages, so too will the AC sportsbooks mature.

The country’s horsemen will also be heavily involved in the sports betting industry, together with Monmouth Park and its enthusiastic operator Dennis Drazin cutting the ribbon on New Jersey’s initial playoff sportsbook, the Monmouth Park Sports Book from William Hill, on June 14, 2018.
This was followed just one month later by the debut of the FanDuel Sportsbook in the Meadowlands. Ever since, the Meadowlands has become the best earning land-based book in New Jersey, which doesn’t really shock given its strong branding, closeness to New Jersey’s and New York’s main population centers, and of course, its perspective of MetLife Stadium — home of the New York Giants and Jets.
The nation’s third horseracing track, Freehold Raceway, has yet to dip its toe in the sports betting oceans, but its chances are looking good.
More NJ sportsbooks coming shortly If you think New Jersey has a great deal of sportsbook today, simply wait.
On the front, we do not expect too much growth. With the Introduction of the William Hill Sports Book in Tropicana Casino, there is only two candidates left in Atlantic City to start books. One, Hard Rock Casino, we hope to go live with a retail book this year, as Hard Rock has signed a Letter of Intent with Gaming Innovation Group to an omni-channel sportsbook platform.
As previously mentioned, Freehold Raceway, owned by Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Gambling (owner of Parx Casino in Pennsylvania) is also a prime candidate to go into the land-based sports betting realm.
On the online front, there is a lot more room to maneuver as each sports gambling license holder is eligible for three branded websites, or skins. Some, such as Monmouth Park and Resorts AC, have already debuted two skins, but many others, such as heavyweights Tropicana, Hard Rock Casino, and Golden Nugget, have not launched any. Anticipate multiple AC-branded online sportsbooks to pop up in the not-so-distant future, and also for other businesses like the Kindred Group (currently aligned with Hard Rock Casino) and Australian-based PointsBet (partnered with the Meadowlands) to also launch online books in New Jersey.
When the smoke clears it will not be unheard of to find upwards of 30 online sportsbooks in New Jersey.
Regulations, taxes, and revenue It was just a few short weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court kicked PASPA into the wayside which New Jersey passed sports betting legislation. The bill passed by unanimous vote in both chambers and was swiftly signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy (who happened to place the initial bet at Monmouth Park later that week) on June 11.
Regulation of this business was handed off to the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, the same agency that manages oversight for Atlantic City casinos and online gaming websites in New Jersey. Luckily, the state was primed to offer sports betting for several decades, enabling regulators to release emergency regulations only two days after Murphy penned the sport gambling bill into legislation.
New Jersey law mandates that only qualified casinos and racetracks be eligible for a sports betting license, which online sportsbook operators must be partnered with a permit holder. Other points of interest:
The fee for a sports wagering license was set at a minimum of $100,000
The tax rate is set at 8.5percent for land-based places, and 13 percent for internet sites, with horsemen needed to pay an extra 1.25% to the Department of Local Government Services in the Dept. of Community Affairs.
Permit holders are restricted to three individually branded sites, or skins.
Wagering on college sports is permitted, unless a New Jersey college or college team is involved. Then it is a no-go.
Permit holders have a 270-day window (transactional waiver) to run online sportsbooks in the lack of a bodily sportsbook.
New Jersey doesn’t cover an integrity fee to professional sports leagues in exchange for league and data oversight, nor will it likely ever.
With regards to handle, New Jersey novels took $184 million in stakes during September 2018. And from June — September, the industry produced over $40.4 million in revenue. Word is still out on just how big the business will get, since there are still a lot of books that haven’t established yet, and many would-be bettors are still unaware of the distinction between legal and offshore sites, or that legal sports betting is even a thing. Industry analysts view NJ sports gambling topping out at just over $300 million in annual revenue, which might render it an ever-so-slightly larger moneymaker than in Nevada. We tend to agree with this investigation.
A brief history of New Jersey sports betting New Jersey’s battle to legalize sports betting within its borders extends all of the way back to 2009, when State Sen. Raymond Lesniak introduced sports gambling legislation. His bill would readily pass via voter referendum in 2011, resulting then Governor Chris Christie to pass it into law the following year.
Unfortunately there was one enormous roadblock, and that was the skilled and Amateur Sports Protection Amendment (PASPA) of 1992. PASPA, driven by former New York Knick Bill Bradley, illegal sports wagering in all but four states (and actually only Nevada). Lately, New Jersey needed a 1 year window from the beginning of PASPA to pass legislation legalizing sports betting from the state, but political chaos doomed the effort. Because of this, New Jersey was effectively closed from sports betting for another 25 decades.
Shortly after sports betting regulations were posted in August 2012, professional sports leagues filed a suit against Christie and New Jersey. The upcoming several years were riddled with disappointment for New Jersey, since it lost in the district courts, then twice at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Subsequently in June 2014, the nation has been delivered another devastating blow, if the U.S. Supreme Court refused to accept New Jersey’s allure.
Also in 2014, the constantly staunch gaming proponent Lesniak went to focus on new sports betting legislation that would function as a type of PASPA workaround. Same effect, with New Jersey and Christie once again dropping to the leagues at the courts. However, by this time, the prevailing attitude toward sports betting was starting to show some cracks. Guided by this, New Jersey once again asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its case. This time, it approved, hearing oral arguments in Christie v. NCAA (afterwards Murphy v. NCAA) on December 4, 2017.
Five-and-a-half month after, on May 14, 2018, the Court announced its decision, voting 7-2 that PASPA violated the 10th amendment, and deeming it completely unconstitutional by a 6-3 count. Only a few weeks later, New Jersey passed a new sports gambling bill, also at a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Monmouth Park sportsbook on June 14, 2018, the industry has been born.Today, it thrives.
