Apologies for bumming outside Buzz City, but the nicest thing to say about the Hornets’ future could be that they have not traded away any prospective first-round picks.
All offseason paths that are possible apparently send them on a summer vacation to nowhere. Break the bank to maintain Kemba Walker, and you are probably paying the luxury tax for a lottery team. Allow him to walk, and you’re losing the hottest player in franchise history. Splurge on him and Jeremy Lamb, and you might be footing among basketball’s biggest payrolls. Reduce both Walker and Lamb, and you aren’t returning anyone who averaged 11 points each game.
They should finally have some cover area in 2020 this summer if the Hornets pinch pennies. Of course, this hasn’t been a destination that is free-agent, and also a Walker passing will leave them without an All-Star recruiter.
Cementing Charlotte to the bottom spot? Its exciting prospects are Miles Bridges and Malik Monk. The prior is a career 37.4 percent shot. The latter possesses rookie averages of 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds.
If these are the building blocks, the Hornets might be building a house of cards.
